Inspired by...

Last week Lisa wrote about Jane Austen... I love Jane she always inspires me. I particularly love this quote from Northanger Abbey.

"Only a novel"... in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour are conveyed to the world in the best chosen language.

It says, very passionately, exactly what I feel in regards to novels and when I'm feeling particularly down about writing in general this picks me up.

What kinds of thing do you use as a pick-me-up? What inspires you to get back up when you are down?

  1. Eye of the Tiger.
Chocolate, imported if its a bad day.
Um, okay, literary pick-me-ups - would have to be a few poems like, Langston Huges, Mother to Son. As for novels, Jane Eyre has a wierd way of lifting my spirits.

  2. Well, for me inspiration comes in reading about successful authors and other successful people that made their dreams come true. I'm a sucker for reality tv that shows people going after their dreams like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. These shows inspire me to go after my writing dreams.
As far as reading to get inspired to write good books do help, but I must say that badly written books inspire me more. Isn't that terrible? But they help me to feel like I can do it. Not necessarily that I could do better but that there is room in the publishing industry for all levels of writing. This inspires me to keep going and to not languish over my slowly emerging talent.

  4. Inspiration...mine comes out of nowhere most of the time. Though when I want a certain mood I definitely turn to music. I love celtic instrumental music, like the Soundtrack to Braveheart, Loren McKennitt music (though most of it has vocals), the Secret Garden, etc.

  5. I actually get discouraged by other people's success--like this world isn't big enough for all of us to succeed or something. Silly me.

Inspiration: Mountains. Up away, and silent. I might go for beaches (considering my current location,) but they're too touristy and hot.

Pick me up? A good hour of cuddling with my "little's" who won't be little that much longer.
