My first conference and audio books

by Lacey Gunter

I am supper excited and a little nervous to be attending my first writers conference next week. I will be going to Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers (WIFYR). I have heard wonderful things about the conference. So no matter what happens, I am sure it will be an enriching experience. Either way, wish me luck, and if you see me there stop and say hi. I will report back my experience and some things I have learned after the conference.

Until then, I have a simple recommendation for you supper busy mommy writers. I have three young children for which I am a stay at home mom too. But I also have a part time job as a statistical consultant. This means most of the free time I have away from the kids is spent working on my part time job. So that doesn't leave a lot of free time for personal reading. I obviously read profuse amounts of picture books and early chapter books with my kids.  But most successful authors, agents and editors recommend a fair amount of reading outside your genre of writing.

So what is a mommy writer like me to do?  Simple...audio books.  How many hours do we moms spend being chauffeur extraordinaire? You certainly can't fill in that time with writing. But if you are a reasonably safe driver, you can put that time to good use listening to the newest and greatest best-selling novel or one of the long respected classics. If you are not a great driver, put an audio book on while you are cleaning the house, doing laundry, cooking dinner or taking the kids for a walk.

It is a great alternative for the time cramped mommy writer.  Plus, the talented people they get to read the books are often way more exciting and entertaining than the voice in your head. Try it out. You might find that both you and your kids love it.  Then you can spend the little free time you actually have writing. =)
