What kind of writer are you?

I think the hardest part of being a new writer is figuring out what kind of a writer I am. Am I the type that writes a ton then my editing process just consists of cutting? Or do I write a bare bones story then have to flesh it out? Do I write better at night, daytime, or the wee hours of morning? Do I use outlines or just fly by the seat of my pants? Do I write scenes out of order or do I have to have a proper timeline to function? There are a million questions out there to answer and I still don't have them all. So my question to all of you is What kind of writer are you? Tell me something about your writing process that you have learned about yourself!
Thanks,
Nikki

  1. I'm so a, "I'll listen to my characters and write whenever they tell me to, or else I won't sleep because they'll hound me all night," writer. LOL! Right now though, I'm rewriting a series... so it's pretty easy for me to stck with the plots and outlines already given to me--as long as my characters behave! Muhahah. But once I start writing just to write--i think i'll need at least some main things in place. What i want said, what's the main conflict, and what's the moral gonna be. After that, I'll just fly by the seat of my pants! hahah! Great post nikki!

  2. That's a really good question Nikki. I think I'm pretty flexible. I know what the general storyline is before I start but as I write, the characters tend to become more and more bossy and I let them run the show unless they get out of hand. I write better at night or on the weekend simply because I have more free time without the kids needing my attention. I definitely have to go with the timeline. Too much changes from my original storyline to my end product for me to write out of order. I honestly think it is impossible to tell from my first book whether I'm going to write too much or too little because I'm learning so much about writing and finding my own style right now that I expect my next book to be drastically different. I think the editing process will be significantly shorter on the next, at least I hope it will. :)

  3. I like to write dialogue first. My stories play out in my mind like scenes. Then I have to go back and like fill in the descriptions. My characters are super bossy too. Even if I have an idea in mind, they always let me know that's not the way it's supposed to go.

  4. I have about 2 "free" hours during the day--so I try to write then. Otherwise, it's early mornings or late evenings.

  5. Okay since I only write life and family histories I have no idea what type of writer I am. I guess I just have all these facts and it just takes form after those facts!! It is really hard for me to put the flesh in...like feeling and oh i don't know trying to get someone for feel like they are actually there that is what is the hardest for me!
